DEVIL SOFTWARE IMPORTANT NOTICE

Recent versions of Java can cause problems with Devil Software.

Issue:

The Devil Software uses Sun Java runtime environment (JRE). When Devil Software is installed a copy of JRE is also installed if it is not already on the computer. During Devil Software installation the version of JRE installed is the most recent available at the time the Devil Software is released.

If the computer is connected to the wide area network (the outside world) it will look for updates for software and Java is one of the applications that use this Update service. A small icon in the system tray (bottom right hand corner of the screen) usually indicates that a new version of JRE is available for download and most users just click on it and then click Yes to install the latest version.

Recent versions of JRE can cause problems with Devil Software under the following conditions:
  1. If the GPS facility is used then the XBT system will work, but the GPS will never be seen by the system.
  2. If the transmitter is used (Argos or Iridium) after an XBT drop is carried out the transmitter application may not be seen by the system.
The versions of JRE that cause this problem are jre-6u18 or later (these are sometimes referred to as "jre.1.6.0_18" or "Java 6 Update 18").

JRE version:

One way to determine which version of JRE is installed on the computer is to go to Control Panel then click on Add or Remover Programs and look for the Java programs and note the highest Update number.

Workaround:

If neither the GPS nor the transmitter facility is used then no action is required, otherwise do the following.
  1. Using the Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel, remove all versions of Java higher than and including Update 18.
If after this, the Devil Software does not run, then remove Devil (using the Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel) and, if it is still there, remove Java6 Update 14, and then reinstall Devil Software.
  2. If in the furture, new versions of JRE are indicated as ready for download (by the small icon appearing in the system tray at the bottom right hand corner of the screen) do not agree to download and install.
Resolution:

A new version of Devil Software that fully addresses the Java issues will be released as soon as possible. Thereafter it will be safe to enable the download and installation of Java updates.

When the new version with corrections is posted, this notice will be remove.
